Designing a Balanced Life for Lasting Happiness

In today's fast-paced world, achieving happiness and maintaining a high quality of life can seem like a complex puzzle. However, what if the answer to lasting happiness could be distilled into a simple equation? This blog post explores the concept of balancing our lives to achieve true happiness, supported by current research and expert insights—with a sprinkle of my whimsy and delight.

Do you ever ask yourself; How Happy am I?

Imagine your happiness as a garden. Some days it blooms with vibrant colors, and other days it might need a little extra care. According to the World Happiness Report 2023, factors such as income, social support, healthy, life expectancy, freedom, generosity, and absence of corruption all contribute to how happy individuals perceive themselves to be. Reflecting on your own happiness can be a powerful starting point. Ask yourself: How vibrant is my garden(happiness) today? What areas of my life need a little more sunshine?

Could This Simple Equation Be the Answer?

Quality of Life - Envy = Happiness

I was scrolling Instagram this morning and I came across a reel, I didn’t save it because I was inspired by the equation that if not listening attentively to the reel, anyone would miss it. So I quickly left Instagram and went to my notes app. To jot down quickly an idea for blog post before it left me.This equation might seem overly simplistic, but it encapsulates a profound truth. By focusing on improving the quality of our lives and reducing envy, we can enhance our overall happiness. Think of it as tending to your garden by nurturing the flowers and pulling out the weeds of envy. To start to understand the equation, I first had to break the equation down, to smaller bite-sized chucks that my brain could comprehend. And by that Wilson, you ask questions!

What are the Attributes of a Quality Life?

So if you are like me, you asked yourself, ‘Self what are the attributes of a quality life?’ Self said ‘google it’. A quality life encompasses several key attributes, like the essential elements of a thriving garden:

1. Health: Physical and mental well-being are foundational, like rich soil for plants.
2. Relationships: Strong, supportive relationships with family, friends, and community members, akin to a garden's pollinators.
3. Purpose: Engaging in meaningful activities and work that align with personal values, much like the sun guiding the growth of plants.
4. Financial Stability: Having sufficient resources to meet basic needs and enjoy some luxuries, like having enough water to nourish your garden.
5.Leisure and Recreation: Time to relax, explore hobbies, and enjoy life’s pleasures, like butterflies fluttering through your garden.

Research from Harvard's Study of Adult Development, which has followed individuals for over 80 years, underscores that close relationships, more than money or fame, are what keep people happy throughout their lives.

What is Envy?

Envy is the emotion that arises when we compare ourselves to others and feel discontented or resentful because they have something we desire. It's a pesky weed that can choke the life out of our happiness if left unchecked. Understanding envy involves recognizing its triggers, such as social media, where curated images of others' successes can create unrealistic comparisons.

What is Happiness?

Happiness is a state of well-being characterized by emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy. It’s not just about feeling good in the moment but also involves a deeper sense of fulfillment and purpose. Positive psychology expert Martin Seligman describes happiness through the PERMA model: Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment. Think of happiness as the diverse array of flowers in your garden, each bringing its unique beauty and fragrance.

What is Life?

Not the game Life, although that was a good game. Life is a journey of experiences, growth, and learning. It’s a complex tapestry of moments that include joy, sorrow, challenges, and triumphs. Embracing life means recognizing its transient nature and finding ways to appreciate the present while planning for a fulfilling future. It's like the changing seasons, each with its own beauty and lessons to teach.

Why Life Design? Well there is nothing on the face of this planet and nothing within this solar system that has not been designed. Why would or why should life design be integral to this equation, because what is the point in knowing the equation but deciding not to apply it to your life.

What is Life Design?

Life design is an intentional approach to crafting a life that aligns with your values, goals, and desires. It involves:

1. Self-awareness: Understanding your strengths, weaknesses, passions, and values, much like knowing what plants thrive in your garden.
2. Goal Setting: Defining what you want to achieve in various aspects of life, like planning the layout of your garden.
3. Planning: Creating actionable steps to reach your goals, similar to planting and nurturing seeds.
4. Adaptability: Being flexible and open to change as you navigate life's uncertainties, like weathering unexpected storms.

Designing your life is about making conscious choices that steer you toward your ideal version of happiness and fulfillment.

2. Set Clear, Achievable Goals: Identify what you want to achieve in health, relationships, career, and personal growth. Plant seeds for the future you desire.
3. Reduce Envy: Limit exposure to sources that trigger envy and practice gratitude for what you have. Weed out those pesky comparisons.
4. Foster Relationships: Invest time and effort into building and maintaining strong, supportive relationships. Cultivate a garden of friends and family.
5. Prioritize Health: Make physical and mental health a priority through regular exercise, a balanced diet, and mindfulness practices. Tend to your own well-being like a gardener cares for prized plants.
